Etymology: Hypseleotris: Greek, hypselos = high + The name of a Nile fish, eleotris (Ref. 45335); bucephala: Name from the Greek roots 'bu' meaning large, and 'kephale', Latinized to 'cephalus' meaning head; in reference to the blunt profile and enlarged forehead in males (Ref. 128732).

Dorsal spines (total): 8 - 9; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10 - 12; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 10 - 12; Vertebrae: 29 - 30. This species can be distinguished from the southeastern Hypseleotris by the following set of characters: blunt head, snout rounded in profile, with dorsal scales; absence of pointed median fin tips of H. acropinna, H. galii, H. mooloboolaensis; distinct median fin coloration in breeding males, with red, black and orange stripes on the distal half of the fin, often with a thin white edge (Ref. 128732).
