Etymology: Chlamydoselachus: chlamydos (Gr.), cloak or mantle, referring to first pair of gill slits that fit like a cloak or frill around throat; selachos (Gr.), a cartilaginous fish (i.e., shark or ray) (See ETYFish); africana: Named for the Marine and Coastal Management research vessel Africana (Cape Town, South Africa), from which a paratype was collected, for the “excellent” research surveys it has conducted over the past several decades (See ETYFish).
