Western Central Atlantic: Bahamas, Greater Antilles, and south through the Lesser Antilles to Tobago. Also Belize, Honduras and Providencia Island off Nicaragua.

Dark bands lacking a pale central area; width of pale bands equal to or greater than width of dark bands; color pattern on cheeks usually consisting of two bars or spots arranged in bars under the eye, spaces between posteriormost bar and preopercular margin usually lacking spots; pectoral fin base with a single spot, usually located on central or lower portion of base, often extending anteriorly toward opercular membrane; pectoral fin rays modally 15 (Ref. 34188).
