Etymology: Utiaritichthys: A waterfall in Papagayo river, Matto Grosso, named Utiariti in Campo Novo do Paresis, Sapezal.
Eponymy: Colonel Senna Braga was the Commander of the 5º Militar Grupamento de Engenharia (i.e. an engineering corps). He helped the author to obtain specimens when Miranda Ribeiro visited the type locality; Salto de Utiarity, Brazil (1909). (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
