Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

Adults occur in swamps, marshes, rice fields, backwaters, stream stretches with stagnant water and dense vegetation (Ref. 59043). In Fuxian Lake, China, they are found in upper and middle layers of shallow coastal waters (Ref. 26717). Adults feed mainly on filamentous algae and zooplankton (Ref. 26717). They mature in 3 months time. Spawning occurs between April and September when temperature rises above 26°C. Can tolerate temperatures from 0 to 42°C, surviving winter under ice (Ref. 59043).

Life cycle and mating behavior Maturity | Reproduction | Spawning | Eggs | Fecundity | Larvae

A cluster of eggs, about 15-50, are spawned every few days in the morning and females carry them for a few hours, until the eggs are entangled into aquatic vegetation by the filaments which cover them. Eggs hatch in 10-12 days at 24°C (Ref. 59043).

Estimates based on models

Phylogenetic diversity index (Ref. 82804):  PD50 = 0.5000   [Uniqueness, from 0.5 = low to 2.0 = high].
Bayesian length-weight: a=0.00479 (0.00189 - 0.01213), b=3.13 (2.91 - 3.35), in cm total length, based on LWR estimates for this (Sub)family-body shape (Ref. 93245).
Trophic level (Ref. 69278):  2.7   ±0.31 se; based on food items.
Generation time: 0.4 ( na - na) years. Estimated as median ln(3)/K based on 1 growth studies.
Resilience (Ref. 120179):  Low, minimum population doubling time 4.5 - 14 years (Assuming fec < 100).
Fishing Vulnerability (Ref. 59153):  Low vulnerability (10 of 100).
