Soft-dorsal and anal-fin rays usually 13-14; pectoral fin-rays 15; scales in lateral series 40; vertebrae 15+17-18=32-33; snout relatively short and convex; color in life reddish or brown with midlateral series of relatively large, dark brown blotches and a pair of thin dark stripes radiating from rear lower corner of eye across preopercle.
