Etymology: Pseudochondrostoma: Name refers to its morphological similarity with the genus Chondrostoma as a consequence of homoplasy in multiple traits.

Diagnosed from its congeners by having the following characters: slightly arched lower jaw edge; 60-70 + 3-4 scales on lateral line; anal fin usually with 8½ branched rays; 18-24 gill rakers; 5-5 pharyngeal teeth; caudal peduncle depth 1.9-2.1 times in its length; and upper half of body with numerous small black dots for individuals from Portugal and Galicia (Ref. 59043).
Found in the middle stretches of rivers, in areas with current. Feeds on vegetal matter, supplemented by small invertebrates and detritus. Occurs in groups, especially during prespawning migration. Spawns from April to June. (Ref. 59043).
