Dorsal spines (total): 1; Dorsal soft rays (total): 61 - 65; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 52 - 55; Vertebrae: 67 - 70. Opercle with an ocellated spot. Gill membranes fused with the isthmus. Usually 6 pores in preopercular canal; no posterior otic sensory canal pore; posterior interorbital pore usually absent. A pale bar below eye; a pale stripe from posterodorsal region of eye to anterior of lateral line; pale median stripe from tip of snout to origin of dorsal fin. Spots arranged in 3-5 irregular rows.
Inhabits coarse sand bottoms with weed and sponge. The species has been taken by trawl in 4 to 8 m from Exmouth Gulf and at 60 m in the Arafura Sea.
