Eponymy: The etymology is not explained by Bonaparte, and it may not be an eponym. However, Telestes was the name of the last king of ancient Corinth (748 BC) and of a poet of 5th-century Greece, so the name might refer to one of these. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Identification keys | Morphology | Morphometrics
Vertebrae: 39. Diagnosed from its congeners by having the following characters: dorsal fin with 7½ branched rays; anal fin usually with 8½ (rarely 7½) branched rays; posterior margin of dorsal and anal fins markedly rounded; snout stout, markedly rounded, mouth almost or clearly subterminal; skin not thickened, scales clearly visible, covering whole body, often narrowly to widely separated, especially in pre-pelvic area; scales very thin, not overlapping; lateral line usually ending above anal fin, usually slightly interrupted, usually with 51-70 pored scales; and broad dark midlateral stripe from eye to end of caudal peduncle within pigmented area on back and flank (Ref. 59043).
Found in lowland water bodies, with little current, and in springs and associated wetlands (Ref. 26100). Inhabits streams and sources with clear (often cold) water. Occurs in subterranean waters during winter or droughts. Threatened due to pollution, habitat destruction and introduction of Alburnus arborella, Squalius cephalus and Lepomis gibbosus (Ref. 59043).
