Dorsal spines (total): 0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 13 - 21; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 12 - 23. Total scutes 30 to 32; vertical striae on scales continuous or overlapping, numerous small perforations on hind part of scale. Distinguished from S. zunasi by having more lower gill rakers and a deeper body; from S. hualiensis by the absence of black tips to its caudal and dorsal fins; from S. fimbriata and S. albella by the continuous striae on its scales.
Forms schools in coastal waters.
