Ecology
Marine; reef-associated; depth range 10 - 53 m (Ref. 37816). Tropical
Western Pacific: Philippines and eastern Idonesia to Fiji, north to the Ryukyu Islands, south to the Great Barrier Reef and New Caledonia. Recently recorded from Tonga (Ref. 53797).

Inhabits invertebrate-rich inshore reef to outer reef walls where usually in caves in depths of about 25 meters or more. Found singly or in pairs and on one occasion a small groups was observed among plate-corals on soft bottom (Ref. 48637). Feeds on algae and small invertebrates (Ref. 89972). Moves fleetingly from one hole of the reef to the other. Very secretive.
