Eponymy: Captain Émile Gustave Alexandre Popelin (1847–1881) was a Belgian officer who died of a liver abscess on the shores of Lake Tanganyika (where this cichlid is endemic). [...] (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
Issue
Tanzanian populations are regarded as belonging to an undescribed species C. sp. "bifrenatus" by Ref. 95611. A revision of the conspecifity of the populations of Chalinochromis popelini on the eastern and western coast of Lake Tanganyika is necessary.

Africa: Lake Tanganyika (Ref. 5610), found on both the western (DR Congo) and the eastern (Tanzania) coast of the lake (Ref. 46829).
