Etymology: Sinocyclocheilus: Latin, sino, sina = from China + Greek, kyklos = circle + Greek, cheilos = lip (Ref. 45335); guilinensis: Derived from the name of the collection locality, Guilin City.

The status of the type of this species must be fixed, and Sinocyclocheilus guilinensis Zhao, Zhang & Zhou 2009 must be regarded both as a junior synonym and a primary homonym. See nomenclatural details in Eschmeyer (CofF ver. Oct. 2012: Ref. 92135).

Dorsal soft rays (total): 7; Anal soft rays: 5; Vertebrae: 36 - 37. Can be distinguished from all other species of the genus Sinocyclocheilus by the following combination of characters: completely scaled body; well developed eyes; last unbranched ray of dorsal fin soft, without serration; 19-20 scale rows above the lateral line and 11-12 below the lateral line; 34-36 scales around caudal peduncle; 8-11 gill rakers; 8-9 pre-dorsal vertebrae (Ref. 76842).
Adults occur in caves or subterranean rivers (Ref. 76842).
