Etymology: Puntioplites: Latin, punctum = point, the point of the sword + Greek, hoplon = weapon (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Jan Theodore van Bloemen Waanders (1820–1889) was a Captain, then Lieutenant-Colonel, of the Artillery, East Sumatra and an amateur naturalist. He was the son of Hendrik Lodewijk van Bloemen Waanders (above). He collected the types. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Found in large river habitats. Primarily herbivorous, feeding on aquatic macrophytes, inundated terrestrial vegetation and filamentous algae along with some insects (Ref. 12693).
