Etymology: Ptychochromis: Greek, ptyx, = fold + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335); curvidens: Specific name comes from the Latin, curvus, a 'curve', and dens, a 'tooth', in reference to the apomorphically recurved oral jaw dentition characteristic for this species (Ref. 57663).

It is distinguished from all congeners by the presence of a characteristically robust and strongly recurved oral dentition (Ref. 57663). An extremely deep-bodied and robust species, rather less laterally compressed than other members of the genus (Ref. 57663). Coloration in life: body dark golden-green dorsal of midline, and bright, iridescent golden below; no distinctive lateral markings; unpaired fins dusky charcoal gray, membranes grayish to hyaline, pelvic fins hyaline proximal to base, blackish distally, and pectoral fins bright yellowish-orange (Ref. 57663). Ground coloration in preservative is dark brownish-green
