Etymology: Paraliparis: Greek, para = the side of + Greek, liparis = fat (Ref. 45335); lasti: Named for Peter R. Last whose studies of Australian fishes have added fundamentally to the knowledge of the deep-sea fauna of that region.

Caudal-fin rays 8; pectoral fin notched, upper and lower pectoral lobes long; pectoral without rudimentary rays, with 3 round radials; chin pores paired, small, not in pits; uppermost pectoral ray horizontal with eye center; HL 19.7% SL; preanal 37% SL; mandible to anus short, 11.4% SL; skin semitransparent, reddish-brown, peritoneum brownish-black (Ref. 42734).
