Short description Identification keys | Morphology | Morphometrics

Vertebrae: 36. Distinguished from all other characid fishes by the following combination of characters: infraorbitals fused uniquely, resulting in less than six autogenous bones; presence of a single tooth row in the premaxilla; presence of cheirodontin-like teeth, somewhat pedunculated, expanded and compressed distally, with cusps similar in shape and perfectly aligned along dorsal margin; ventral margin of toothed portion of maxillary curved towards the ventral margin of the premaxilla and maxillary teeth forming a continuous series with premaxillary teeth; margins of pre- and postzygapophyses with projections anteriorly and posteriorly directed; accumulation of epithelial cells forming globular structures distributed over head and scales; and base of anal-fin without scales covering basal portion of unbranched and anterior branched rays (Ref. 54751).

Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

Found in shallow, headwater stream with fast water current over a rocky bottom and margin, with a small amount of riparian or submerged vegetation (Ref. 54751). Feeds on filamentous algae, terrestrial vegetal fragments and insects (Ref. 54751).

Estimates based on models

Phylogenetic diversity index (Ref. 82804):  PD50 = 1.0000   [Uniqueness, from 0.5 = low to 2.0 = high].
Bayesian length-weight: a=0.00955 (0.00428 - 0.02132), b=3.12 (2.93 - 3.31), in cm total length, based on LWR estimates for this (Sub)family-body shape (Ref. 93245).
Trophic level (Ref. 69278):  2.5   ±0.25 se; based on food items.
Resilience (Ref. 120179):  High, minimum population doubling time less than 15 months (Preliminary K or Fecundity.).
Fishing Vulnerability (Ref. 59153):  Low vulnerability (10 of 100).
