Etymology: Myctophum: Greek, mykter, -eros = nose + Greek, ophis = serpent (Ref. 45335); ovcharovi: Named in honor of Oleg Petrovich Ovcharov (InBYuM, Ukrainian Academy of Sciences), myctophid specialist who first noted that M. asperum does not migrate to the surface during its diurnal vertical migrations (Ref. 11324).
