Dorsal spines (total): 17; Dorsal soft rays (total): 7 - 8; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 8; Vertebrae: 26. Distinguished from all other cichlids by its color pattern and its short, low vertical fins. Presence of a series of 8 dark vertical markings, the anteriormost through the eye, the fourth from anteriormost bearing a large midlateral blotch; the fins are immaculate (Ref. 26742).
