Facultative air-breathing in the genus (Ref. 126274); Rarely attains a length of 20 cm (Ref. 27188). Rheophilic species occurring in very sunny rapids with strong current and rocky bottom (Ref. 35381); inhabiting largest part of freshwaters, from headwaters to upstream of the lower falls, with rocky substrate consisting of boulders, stones, gravels, and sand; the exposed wet rocks are also often covered by the Podostemaceae Mourera fluviatilis and Apinagia richardiana (Ref. 90186).
