Etymology: Fundulus: Latin, fundus = bottom; a peculiar name for a topminnow, coined for a bottom species of Atlantic coast being "the abode of the fundulus mudfish" (Ref. 45335).

Freshwater; benthopelagic; non-migratory. Temperate; 5°C - 24°C (Ref. 12468); 31°N - 27°N
North America: Peninsular Florida, USA from St. Johns (Atlantic) and New (Gulf) River drainages south to just below Lake Okeechobee.

Inhabits open areas of lakes and quiet stream pools. Young are usually found in schools near vegetation. 16 cm max TL (Ref. 5723). Not a seasonal killifish. Is very difficult to maintain in aquarium (Ref. 27139).
