Etymology: Eigenmannia: From Eigenmann, 1910, researcher of faunistic studies (Ref. 45335); sayona: Named in reference to 'La Sayona', a spirit of philanderous veneance in Venezuelan lore (Ref. 128865).
Eponymy: Professor Dr Carl Henry Eigenmann (1863–1927) was a German-born American ichthyologist. [...] In Venezuelan folklore, La Sayona is a spirit of philanderous vengeance. Apparently, the name is a homage to the Venezuelan people with no meaning or significance to the fish itself. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
