Etymology: Cynolebias: Greek, kyon = dog + Greek, odous = teeth + Greek, lebias = a kind of small fish (Ref. 45335); gibbus: Named for the prominent convexity of the anterior part of dorsum; an adjective.

Dorsal soft rays (total): 14 - 18; Anal soft rays: 17 - 21; Vertebrae: 37. Central part of dorsal surface of 5th ceratobranchial deeply concave and pronounced convex dorsal profile of body above the pectoral fin base. Pectoral fin of males usually longer with tip reaching between urogenital papilla and base of 3rd anal-fin base. Small golden spots scattered over the dorsal part of body sides. Dorsal-fin rays in males, 17-18, 14-18 in females; anal-fin rays 19-21 in males, 17-20 in females; caudal-fin rays 31-32. Caudal and pectoral fins rounded. Snout gently pointed with lower jaw slightly elongated. Supraorbital neuromasts 33-35 (Ref. 40938).
