Etymology: Australoheros: From the Latin word 'australis' meaning southern, and the name Heros, after the nominotypic genus of the Heroini tribe.
Tribe; saquarema: Named 'saquarema' in reference to the occurrence of this new species in the lagoon system, where it is endemic.

Distinguished from other congeners by the combination of the following characters: caudal vertebrae 12; absence of mark on side of head; 14-15 proximal radials on anal-fin base; head with a depression near the snout in individuals above 3.0 cm SL; scales on upper lateral line row 17-18; wide ectopterygoid; arms of epibranchial 2 with two long tubular processes; arm of epibranchial 1 long; and arms of vertical trunk bar 7 with the same width (Ref. 79631).
