Etymology: Australoheros: From the Latin word 'australis' meaning southern, and the name Heros, after the nominotypic genus of the Heroini tribe.
Tribe; autrani: Named for Felipe Autran, who first studied this new species.
Eponymy: Felipe Tavares Autran was a student in Laboratório de Sistemática e Evolução de Peixes Teleósteos, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, (1990s). He was the first to study this species. (Also see Tavares) (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Distinguished from other congeners by the combination of the following characters: caudal vertebrae 12; absence of mark on side of head; dorsal-fin spines 15-16; dorsal-fin rays 10-12; anal-fin rays 9-10; rib pairs 11; 25-26 proximal radials on dorsal-fin base; 13-14 proximal radials on anal-fin base; caudal-peduncle length 10.2-11.9% SL; snout not robust; absence of depression on head; wide ectopterygoid; arms of epibranchial 2 with two long tubular processes; and arms of vertical trunk bar 7 with the same width (Ref. 79631).
