Etymology: Andromakhe: Named for Áνδρομάχη, Andromakhe (‘battle of men’), a character in Greek mythology, she is the wife of Hector, Prince of Troy, and, in Homer’s epic poem Iliad, the mother of Ἀστυάναξ, Astyanax (‘city protector’); saguazu: Specific name derived from Guarani language word sa (eye) guazú (large).
Eponymy: Andromakhe (or Andromache) is a character in Greek mythology: the wife of Hector, Prince of Troy, and the mother of Astyanax. The name was chosen when the authors placed several species formerly in the genus Astyanax into this new genus. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Dorsal soft rays (total): 12; Anal soft rays: 35; Vertebrae: 31 - 33. Maxillary teeth two or three; third or fourth tooth of outer premaxillary series inserted posteriorly to the rest; large eye 41-45% HL; first anal fin ray inserted anterior to last dorsal fin ray; anal fin rays iv-vi, 25-29; and perforated scales in lateral line series 37-39 (Ref. 52391).

Inhabits streams with sandy-rocky bottom, riffles, small falls and pools (Ref. 52391).
