Environment: milieu / climate zone / depth range / distribution range
Ecology
Freshwater; demersal; pH range: 7.5 - 8.0; dH range: 15 - 25. Tropical; 23°C - 26°C (Ref. 2060); 3°S - 9°S

Size / Weight / Age
Maturity: Lm ?  range ? - ? cm
Max length : 8.0 cm SL male/unsexed; (Ref. 4967)
Concealed mostly among rocks during daytime. Nocturnal habits prevail (Ref. 45232). Feed on chironomid larvae, beetle larvae and small crustaceans with occasional ingestion of vegetable material (Ref. 6868). Of no food value (Ref. 4967). Mucus is poisonous to other fishes (Ref. 4537).
Life cycle and mating behavior
Maturity | Reproduction | Spawning | Eggs | Fecundity | Larvae
Spawns in caves. Oviparous (Ref. 205). Previously thought that care of the eggs and young might be done by mouthbrooding solitary males (Ref. 45232); new findings describe the genus Lophiobagrus to be hiding its brood in caves (Ref. 89712).
