Dorsal spines (total): 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 8. This species is distinguished by the following characters: pectoral-fin rays 19; transverse scale series 7; nape with scales, median predorsal scales 7; body depth 5.8-6.0 in SL; snout length 1.5-1.9 in eye diameter (Ref. 94146).
Occurs over sandy bottom, in shallow water in open sandy areas. It is active at night and partly borrowes quickly in the sand when alarmed, like dragonets, by shaking the body and digging using large pectoral fins with their thickened membranes (Ref. 94146).
