Dorsal spines (total): 0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9; Anal soft rays: 7. This species can be diagnosed from all other known congeners by the combination of the following characters: 12-16 oblique black bands, narrower than interspaces at caudal peduncle; anus located closer to caudal fin base than to tip of snout; origin of dorsal fin equidistant between snout tip and base of caudal fin; lateral line incomplete, terminating before pelvic fins; caudal fin truncated with irregular black blotches; upper angle of caudal fin base with a distinct blotch; and barbels much longer than eye diameter (Ref. 95217).
