Etymology: Horabagrus: Named for S.L.Hora, director of Zoological Survey of India + Greek, pagros = a fish, Dentex sp. (Ref. 45335); melanosoma: The name ‘melanosoma’ refers to the black color on the body of new fish; from the Greek words ‘melanos’ means black and ‘some’ means body.

The type locality West Venpala of Manimala River has a width of 40- 50 m, depth <1 to 5 m, bank height of 1 m in summer season, sediments generally silty clay with occasional patches of sand, and moderately dense riparian vegetation. Syntopic with Catla catla, Cyprinus carpio communis, Labeo rohita, Labeo dussumeiri, Cirrhina mrigala, Puntius mahecola, P. amphibus, Pethia ticto, Haludaria fasciata, Drawkinsia filamentosa, Systomus subnasutus, Wallago attu, Heteropneusteus fossilis, Clarias dussumeiri and Ompok malabaricus (Ref. 94428).
