Short description Morphology | Morphometrics

Dorsal soft rays (total): 67-80; Anal soft rays: 48 - 59. This species is distinguished by the following characters: brown body with many sparsely distributed, small, dark, rounded spots or dark marbled markings on ocular side; small scales, not elongated, and a little bit deciduous; supratemporal lateral line usually with antrorse branch; body depth 43.8-58.5% SL (mean 51.2% SL); D 67-80 (mode 75, mean 74.6); A 48-59 (mode 55, mean 54.4); abdominal vertebrae 12-13 (mode 12), caudal vertebrae 23-26 (mode 24) (Ref. 84246).

Inhabits sandy-muddy bottoms, and was recorded from several depth ranges from the following localities: 40-60 m off Soma, Fukushima Prefecture; 40-75 m in Kii Channel; ca. 140-150 m off Hamada, Shimane Prefecture; ca. 60 m in Seto Inland Sea; and, 76-143 m in East China Sea. It was also reported from 30 to 140 m in the Kii Channel, being especially numerous from deeper than 100 m (Ref. 84246).
