Etymology: Phoxinus: Greek, phoxinos = certain river fish (Ref. 45335); strymonicus: Named for the Strymon, a river in Greece in which the species has been collected in its drainages. More on author: Kottelat.
Environment: milieu / climate zone / depth range / distribution range
Freshwater; benthopelagic. Subtropical
Europe: Angitis system in the Strymon drainage in Greece (Ref. 75055). Aegean Sea basin, Struma drainage (Greece, probably Bulgaria). Phoxinus populations in Loudias and Filiouris drainages in Greece are possibly conspecific (Ref. 59043).

Maturity: Lm ?  range ? - ? cm
Max length : 4.8 cm SL male/unsexed; (Ref. 75055)
Morphology | Morphometrics
Distinguished from its congeners in Europe by the absence or having only small patches of breast scales, caudal peduncle depth 2.1-2.5 times in its length, head length 27-29% SL, predorsal length 56-60% SL, pre-anal length 62-68% SL, and anal fin origin usually in front of base of last dorsal ray (Ref. 59043).
Occurs among dense vegetation in shallow water in a small creek fed with spring water and in a canal in cultivated areas in the plain (Ref. 75055). Most abundant in small streams with clear and cold water (Ref. 59043).
