Etymology: Danakilia: Ethiopia desert; for Thysvander Audenaerde (1968) it is a fish from northeast Africa.
Eponymy: Baron Raimondo Franchetti (1889–1935) was a wealthy Italian explorer and adventurer. He organised the expedition that collected the cichlid holotype at his own expense. He was killed in a plane crash in the Egyptian desert. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Dorsal spines (total): 13 - 15; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9 - 11; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 7 - 10; Vertebrae: 27. Lower pharyngeal bone short. Pharyngeal teeth in adult including a group of enlarged, flattened teeth. Scales of chest and belly very small, non-imbrication but contiguous. Scales of flank with rugose calculi in the exposed part. Scales on cheek in 2 or 3 series. No micro-branchiospines.
