Dorsal spines (total): 9 - 10; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 8. This species is distinguished by the following characters: gill rakers on the lower limb of the first branchial arch 11-14 (mode 13, 12 in type specimens); lips small, not enlarged; pectoral fins extending to the third anal spine base; depressed second anal spine extends to caudal peduncle base (Ref. 94655).
Inhabits coastal waters and lagoons, preferring areas with sandy bottoms (Ref. 9303, 37955). Forms schools (Ref. 37955). Feeds on small benthic invertebrates, algae and small fishes (Ref. 9303).
