Definition of Term

monotelic
(English) Capable of reproducing during only a single, usually brief, phase of the entire life cycle; contrasts with polytelic, the ability to come into reproductive condition more than once, as in successive years. Lampreys and Pacific species of salmon are monotelic; most fishes are polytelic. (See also: reproducing, life cycle)
monotélique
(French) Capable de ne se reproduire qu'une seule fois, pendant une courte phase du cycle. Antonyme de polytélique (capacité de se reproduire plus d'une fois, au cours d'années successives). Lamproies et saumons du Pacifique sont des poissons monotéliques ; la plupart des poissons sont polytéliques. (See also: reproducing, life cycle)
