leptocephalus
(English) The elongate highly compressed transparent, ribbon-like and pelagic larval stage of some primitive teleost fishes such as the tarpon, bonefish and eels. leptocephali (plural). The larvae first grow, then shrink prior to metamorphosis. (See also: Tarpons, Bonefishes, larvae)
