Definition of Term

adjuvant
(English) Any substance which, when administered with or before an antigen, heightens and/or affects qualitatively the immune response in terms of antibody formation and/or the cell-mediated response. Adjuvants include BCG, aluminium hydroxide, and water-in-oil emulsions (e.g Freund's adjuvant). Any substance which is added to a drug or other chemical (e.g disinfectant) to enhance its activity.
