species

(English) "Groups of actually (or potentially) interbreeding natural populations which are reproductively isolated from other such groups" (Mayr, 1942, p.120; Ref. 33179); group of animals or plants having common characteristics and able to breed together to produce fertile offspring, so that they maintain their `separateness' from other groups; the basic rank of biological nomenclature.
