Dorsal spines (total): 7-7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 11-12; Anal soft rays: 10-10. This species is distinguished by the following characters: D VII+11 (rarely 12); A 10; pectoral rays 20-21 (rarely 22); pelvic rays I,5 and fused into a cup; scaleless; terminal mouth; first dorsal spine extended in large males and females; head pale with a prominent red stripe from tip of snout across eye ending abruptly above pectoral-fin base with a short orange segment, followed by a short black segment; no cheek stripe; a dark green body with 25 (20-28) thin light green bars running along the full length of the body onto caudal fin base (43-55, both sides added together) (Ref. 97572). |
