Family:  Tetraodontidae (Puffers), subfamily: Tetraodontinae
Max. size:  40 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  demersal; brackish; marine
Distribution:  Indo-West Pacific: South Africa to Indonesia, north to Japan, south to Australia.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 12-14; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 10-12. Body covered with prickles (Ref. 559). Brownish above with pale spots, yellowish white below; narrow dark bars on sides (Ref. 4919).
Biology:  Lives in shallow coastal waters, but enters brackish waters (Ref. 4833).
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC); Date assessed: 10 June 2011 Ref. (130435)
Threat to humans:  harmless
