Family:  Scorpaenidae (Scorpionfishes or rockfishes), subfamily: Scorpaeninae
Max. size:  30 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  demersal; brackish; marine; depth range 5 - 50 m
Distribution:  Indo-West Pacific: southern Australia and New Zealand (Ref. 5755).
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 12-12; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9-10; Anal spines: 3-3; Anal soft rays: 5-5. Gill cover margin with 3 spines and a row of spines beneath the eye. Large mouth with villiform teeth (Ref. 9003).
Biology:  Found on rocky bottoms (Ref. 9563). Known in shallow estuaries from muddy environments to offshore reefs in kelp reef (Ref. 9002). Nocturnal species and juveniles are occasionally seen in large rock pools. Feeds on a wide variety of invertebrates, mainly on crustaceans and fishes (Ref. 9003).
