Africa: Occurs in the Berg River system and Verlorenvlei Rivers, southwest Cape. Probably extinct in the Eerste River, Cape Province, South Africa (Ref. 2801). Usually found near vegetation except when the water is turbid. It can tolerate extreme conditions and survive in various habitats from small streams to large impoundments. Feeding habits varied in different seasons: for small fish benthic feeding during spring and midwater feeding during summer; larger fish fed on corixid bugs during summer but switched to chironomid larvae and zooplankton in winter. Capable of jumping when ascending rapids (Ref. 6465). |
