Max. size:  7 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  demersal; freshwater
Distribution:  Africa: Okavango basin and upper Zambezi River; also from the Kafue and Cunene Rivers and northern areas of Lake Malawi (Ref. 52193). Also reported from the Luongo (lower Luapula tributary, upper Congo River basin) in Zambia (Ref. 27609, 94890) and the Kasai in Angola (Ref. 120641).
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 16-18; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 22-26. Description: Body oval (Ref. 52193). Head rounded; snout short; mouth terminal; nostrils well separated (Ref. 52193). Dorsal fin with 16-18 rays; anal fin with 22-26 rays; dorsal fin origin behind origin of anal fin; caudal fin forked, with rounded lobes (Ref. 13337, 52193). Scales in lateral series 46-53, 12-14 scale rows around caudal peduncle (Ref. 52193).

Colouration: Colour mottled dark brown (Ref. 52193).

Biology:  Inhabits dense vegetation along margins of rivers and floodplain lagoons (Ref. 7248, 52193). Often found in lagoons and backwaters in shallow water just underneath the surface vegetation (Ref. 13337). It feeds on aquatic insect larvae including a large component of Chironomidae (Ref. 13337).
