Family:  Stomiidae (Barbeled dragonfishes), subfamily: Malacosteinae
Max. size:  17.5 cm SL (male/unsexed); 12.8 cm SL (female)
Environment:  bathypelagic; marine; depth range 85 - 2000 m
Distribution:  Atlantic Ocean: Bermuda; tropical and subtropical waters of the North Atlantic, including the Gulf of Mexico.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal soft rays (total): 26-31; Anal soft rays: 30-33. This species is distinguished by having 3 pairs of basibranchial tooth patches; D 26-31, A 30-33, the sum of dorsal- and anal-fin rays 56-63; male postorbital organ length moderate, specimens greater than 6.0 cm, 54.5-103.2% fleshy orbit, 9.6-24.8% JL; male anterior orbital organ length moderate, specimens grater than 6.0 cm, 11.2-25.1% fleshy orbit, 2.3-4.4% JL (Ref. 75669).
