Family:  Leuciscidae (Minnows), subfamily: Pogonichthyinae
Max. size:  7.6 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater
Distribution:  North America: Mississippi River basin from eastern Ohio to southern Minnesota and Nebraska south to Louisiana; Wolf River (Lake Michigan drainage) in Wisconsin; Gulf drainages from Mississippi River in Louisiana to Lavaca River in Texas, USA.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 8-8; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 7-7. Sides of the body light tan or silvery with numerous black pepper-like spots. Belly white. Fins clear. Shape of the body is fusiform with the ventral area somewhat dorso-ventrally flattened. Mouth inferior with any teeth, small, but conspicuous barbels at the corners of the mouth (Ref 53793).
Biology:  Inhabits sand and gravel runs of small to large rivers (Ref. 86798).
