Max. size:  10 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathypelagic; marine; depth range 600 - 2000 m, non-migratory
Distribution:  North Atlantic: North of 30°N, from Bermuda to Madeira and north of the Azores.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal soft rays (total): 3-3; Anal soft rays: 3-3. Females distinguished by the following characteristics: distal escal appendage less than 10% SL; short posterior ascal appendage present; barbel divided nearly at base into 3 unpaired primary branches; subdermal pigment in two bands on side of body; males without pointed sphenotic spines (Ref. 86949).
Biology:  Parasitic males.
