Indo-Pacific. Recent authors have regarded Kaupichthys hyoproroides (Strömman), described from the Atlantic, as a circumtropical species; however, Kenneth A. Tighe, who is revising family Chlopsidae, will recognize the Indo-Pacific Kaupichthys diodontus as distinct from Kaupichthys hyoproroides (Ref. 10685). |

Description: Characterized by uniform greyish brown color with pale fins; longer pectoral fins than eye diameter, about 5.5-7.7 in HL; body depth at anus 18.5-28 in TL; snout to dorsal-fin origin 6.4-7.6; snout to anus 3.2-3.7 in TL; HL 6.4-7.3 in TL; snout length 3.9-4.6 in HL; large eye, about 9.5-12.5 in HL, over posterior part of gape; slightly projecting upper jaw; upper and lower jaw with small, multiserial conical teeth; two widely separated rows of vomerine teeth (Ref. 90102). |
Widely distributed species occurs on seaward reefs. |
