Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 8-9; Dorsal soft rays (total): 11-12; Anal spines: 1-1; Anal soft rays: 11-12; Vertebrae: 30-31. This species is distinguished from other southeastern Hypseleotris by the following set of characters: blunt head and lack of dorsal scales up until posteriad as middle of second dorsal fin; absence of pointed median fin tips (present in H. acropinna, H. galii, H. mooloboolaensis); and distinct median fin coloration in mature males: distal portion of fin bearing band of pale orange, shading into thin band of white (Ref. 128732).
