Max. size:  9.93 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range 100 - 400 m
Distribution:  Western Central Atlantic: southern coast of USA and throughout Gulf of Mexico.
Diagnosis:  This species of the H. aculeatus complex is distinguished by having a relatively strong and sharp tubercles on dorsal part of body; both inner and outer sphenotic tubercles are well developed; a row of tubercles almost always present dorsal to orbit; trifid principal tubercles on disk margin with anterior spinelet enlarged; dense arrangement of tubercles on the tail (Ref. 85070).
Biology:  Most specimens are taken less than 100 m (Ref. 85070).
