Environment:  pelagic; freshwater, non-migratory
Distribution:  Asia: endemic to Lake Biwa, Japan. Introduced to Lakes Kasumigaura and Sagami.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 7-7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10-10; Anal spines: 1-1; Anal soft rays: 10-10
Biology:  Inhabit offshore areas in the lake almost throughout the year (Ref. 76915). Spawn in spring (Ref. 76915). Semelparous (Ref. 76911). Males care for the eggs in nest (Ref. 76913). Caught for food (Ref. 559).
